Rosby
wines are produced from one of Mudgee’s best-rated vineyards and are
available from an invitation-only mailing list. Not sold through
bottle shops or restaurants, with no cellar-door and no money spent
on marketing, it is the Mudgee region’s most exclusive wine label.
Rosby is a small vineyard about 10 kilometres
north of Mudgee, wholly owned and operated by the Norton-Knight
family. After planting a 15-acre block of shiraz and cabernet
sauvignon grapes in 1996, the Norton-Knights started producing some
of the most consistently excellent red wine grapes in the area and
soon won a long-term contract to provide fruit to Southcorp, along
with other high-profile local vineyards Abercorn and Huntington.
Early vintages saw Abercorn win several gold medals and trophies for
its wine made with Rosby grapes, and so the Norton-Knights decided
to retain a small parcel of fruit for their own wine label.
The Rosby wine label is available only at a
highly personal level, with no cellar-door tastings, no marketing
hype and no bottle shop distribution. Several times a year, the
family hosts an exclusive invitation-only lunch in their
purpose-built mud-brick hut overlooking the vineyard, where the
toils of each vintage are celebrated with the popping of corks long
into the night. Wine orders are only taken at these lunches, or at
special events hosted by the family. You can also taste through the
range and take a stroll through the vineyard with the family by
appointment.
Since the label was launched in 2005, each
vintage has been independently rated as a premium wine,
characterised by full-bodied fruit flavours of berry, plum, spice
and dark chocolate. Our 2004 Shiraz was recently awarded a rating of
89/100 in the 2008 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.
Rosby is different to other vineyards in the
Mudgee region for several reasons. It was planted on a unique
high-altitude north-facing block, which makes it resistant to frost
and many common mildews found in the area. The block was also chosen
for its rich basalt soil over quartz gravel, providing excellent
drainage and a natural high-nutrient delivery system. In addition to
its enviable position, the vineyard is closely managed by both the
vigneron (Gerald Norton-Knight) and winemaker (Tim Stevens of
Huntington) in a way that facilitates high-quality, low-yield crops
of no more than two tonnes an acre through bunch-thinning and
specialised pruning techniques. This further cements Rosby as one of
Mudgee’s best-rated and vineyards and most exclusive wine labels.
