The Rosby Family

The Viticulturist: Gerald Norton-Knight
Gerry’s long on females with his wife and four daughters, which could explain why he spends so much time in the vineyard. After spending 20 years as an accountant, Gerry finds walking up and down rows of grape vines all day a highly stimulating activity by comparison. He usually divides his time by talking to the vines, making more mud bricks, and hiding the latest Rosby vintage from his artist wife, Kay.

The Winemaker: Tim Stevens
Like many winemakers, Tim came to spend his days in the winery after a previous life in another career. His first job was journalism, where he spent two decades covering rural issues for The Land newspaper, The Australian, and ABC Radio. In 1996, he and established leading Mudgee vineyard Abercorn, before buying the iconic Huntington Estate next door in 2006. Tim has been using Rosby fruit since its first vintage and considers it some of the best in the region for making elegant, drinkable wines.

The Resident Artist: Kay Norton-Knight
Kay is a woman of many talents, with gardening, painting, design and original dance among her top claims to local fame. When she’s not tending to the lavender patch or finding new jobs for Gerry, Kay can be found in her art studio with a paintbrush or modelling clay in hand. Known for her large-scale and often controversial artworks dotted around Mudgee, Kay admits she is more creative after a glass of 2007 Rosby Shiraz.

The Marketer and Event Organiser: Amber Norton-Knight
Most families have a creative type hidden somewhere in their tree, and Amber fills those shoes in the Norton-Knight stable. After first working in film and television production and high-profile events marketing in Sydney and Melbourne, Amber moved to Mudgee in mid-2010 when it became clear her parents needed closer supervision. She is now officially responsible for explaining Facebook to Gerry and vetoing Kay's public dance routines.

The Sales Force: Emma Norton-Knight, Katrina Norton-Knight
Emma and Katrina are first and third in the Norton-Knight birth order, which they say means they're generally underpaid and overworked. Both have extensive experience in sales and marketing, so they are usually the first point of call for Gerry when Kay has drunk her way through the latest season's profits. With a helpful hand on your VISA card and a winning country smile, these two will make stocking up the cellar an occasion worth repeating.

The Animal Wrangler: Millie Norton-Knight
The youngest of the four Norton-Knight girls, Millie has always based her activities around looking incredibly cute. As a result, she's usually surrounded by a collection of puppies, injured birds, sick goats or a needy native animal all vying for her attention. Over the years, many wayward animals have found themselves centre-stage at Rosby, with Millie often called in to clean up the mess. See the back label of each new Rosby vintage to read some of their tales.

The Oracle: Anon
Nobody quite knows who The Rosby Oracle is or where he came from, but as long as his glass is topped up, he is a friendly kind of bloke. For the latest techniques, trends, tips and tricks on winemaking and tasting, there's no better source than The Oracle. This rare creature can usually only be found in its natural habitat of The Hut, as well as the occasional YouTube clip when his wireless is working.

The Words: Lucy Robertson
If there's one thing Kay and Gerald Norton-Knight don't need, it's another daughter. But that hasn't stopped local wordsmith and free lunch detector Lucy Robertson from nominating herself as the Next Norton-Knight. This well-known imposter claims to be part of the Norton-Knight clan, despite not being able to make an A-line skirt within a 10-minute time limit, or bake cheesecake without a recipe. She can often be found (uninvited) at Hut events and family dinners.

Sculptor in Residence: Maurice Berrie
One day, a compact man with a wide grin emerged out of the Rosby garden and announced his name was 'Maurice'. The Norton-Knights were surprised at first, but once they saw his artistic talent with a welder, they were more than happy to let him stay. Now an award-winning artist, Maurice's metal and wood sculptures take pride of place throughout the vineyard, competing with Kay’s own creations.
